Which Referencing Style?

From 2021, the referencing style APA 7th has been rolling out to new students, replacing the previously used Bournemouth University (BU) Harvard Referencing Style. For students who started their course pre-2021, the BU Harvard referencing style still applies.

Please see the list below which clarifies the referencing style to be used by each course and year for the 2023/24 academic year:

Undergraduate Courses (2023/24)

Gateway: APA 7th

MChiro 1: APA 7th

MChiro 2: APA 7th

MChrio 3: APA 7th

MChiro 4: BU Harvard

Postgraduate Courses (2023/24)

MSc Chiropractic (Pre-registration) year 1: APA 7th

MSc Chiropractic (Graduate Entry) year 2: APA 7th  

MSc Chiropractic: APA 7th

The American Psychological Association has produced a tutorial on how to use the APA Style.

  • Basics of APA Tutorial  - This tutorial is designed for those who have no previous knowledge of APA Style.

  • APA Style Blog - The APA Style Blog is the official companion to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association.

  • APA Style.org - The APA Style website includes some useful quick answers for referencing and formatting.

The School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences uses the APA referencing style. APA is an author-date referencing style developed by the American Psychological Association.

Help with Referencing

Using referencing software like EndNote Online to manage your references can help you to organise them and cite them consistently in the documents that you write. The Harvard (BourneU) Style and the APA Style are both available in EndNote (in addition to hundreds of other referencing styles), for more information, see our guide to using EndNote. You could also consider completing the online tutorials on the Study Skills pages or booking onto a workshop with Library & Learning Services staff.
