Ellen MacArthur

Dame Ellen MacArthur first hit the headlines in 2001 when, aged 24, she came second in the solo, non-stop Vendée Globe race around the world. She had already won the solo transatlantic race from the UK to the USA and went on to win the 2002 Route du Rhum from France to the Caribbean. In 2004, she sailed over 26,000 miles in 71 days to become the fastest person to circumnavigate the globe single-handed. She was appointed a Dame in 2005 and received the Legion d'Honneur from French President Nicolas Sarkozy.

Ellen founded the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust in 2003, helping young people regain confidence after cancer treatment. Her sailing experience inspired a new focus on resource sustainability, leading her to found the Ellen MacArthur Foundation in 2010 to promote a regenerative, circular economy. Ellen is also a Patron of The Big Bang Fair, the UK’s largest celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths.
